Pedal Harp Bridge Pin

Why This Was Created

I needed a bridge pin that was vertically adjustable and could be manufactured at different heights to accommodate the specific demands of the OpenPedal system. Unlike a lever harp, where horizontal adjustment is primarily for string alignment, the OpenPedal (and traditional pedal harps) benefit from vertical adjustability as a secondary means of regulating the action . Lowering the bridge pin (closer to the soundboard) shortens the string, which raises the pitch. Raising the pin increases the string length, lowering the pitch. On OpenPedal harps, the motor assembly in the neck adds space constraints, meaning a standard lever harp bridge pin was mounted lower and closer to the edge of the neck than comfortable. After a fair amount of trial and error, this solution allows:

• Low mounting position

• Vertical adjustability

• Future modularity - the round pin portion can be swapped for different groove depths or heights (the current string groove is 2mm wide).

• bridgepin_flatmount_base.svg - 2D cut file for base

Note: Threads have been intentionally left off the STL files. Threads should be machined or tapped manually. The pin and hole are both sized for 5mm diameter and suited for 8-32 imperial or M5x0.8 metric threading.

Fabrication Notes

• 3D Printing : Mixed results. ASA and nylon printed sideways (layer lines will help support pin) can hold tension on most strings, but unfortunately the materials act as a slight mute , dampening vibration and tone. These plastics, while strong, aren’t acoustically ideal.

• Recommended Methods :

• Sintered metal 3D printing

• Mold/cast from a 3D printed plastic master using either metal or carbon fiber

• CNC turning or lathe
